AI Agent Security Posture Management: The OWASP Agentic Top 10 and Beyond

When cloud infrastructure was new, companies deployed workloads first and added security later. The result was a decade of cloud security incidents that led to the creation of Cloud Security Posture Management, or CSPM: tools and practices for continuously assessing the security configuration of cloud environments and enforcing compliance at scale. The CSPM market grew to over $5 billion because the reactive approach to cloud security failed so visibly and so expensively.
The same pattern is playing out with AI agents, only faster. Enterprises are deploying agents into production at accelerating rates. Eighty percent of Fortune 500 companies run active agents. But the security infrastructure to govern those agents hasn't kept pace. Over-permissioned agents, unaudited tool access, shadow deployments, and configuration drift are creating the same class of security exposure that unmanaged cloud infrastructure created ten years ago.
AI Security Posture Management, or AISPM, is the emerging practice designed to close this gap. And like CSPM before it, it's about to become non-optional for any enterprise running agents at scale. The question is whether organizations build AISPM proactively or reactively, and the CSPM precedent strongly suggests that proactive investment is dramatically cheaper than the alternative.
The OWASP Agentic AI Top 10
In December 2025, OWASP released its Top 10 for Agentic Applications, cataloguing the specific security risks that AI agents introduce. This isn't a theoretical framework. It's a field guide based on real-world incidents, vulnerability reports, and the collective experience of security practitioners working with production agent deployments. Learn more
The risks break into three categories.
Permission and access risks account for the largest share of agent security incidents. Excessive agency, where an agent has more autonomy and capability than its task requires, is the top risk. An agent built to read customer data that can also modify billing records has excessive agency. Excessive tool use permissions, the second risk, compounds this: agents with access to tools they don't need for their current task. Together, these two risks create the attack surface that makes everything else possible.
Input and output risks address the agent's interaction with data. Prompt injection manipulates agent behavior through crafted inputs. Insecure tool use allows agents to pass unvalidated data to backend systems. Dangerous retrieval occurs when agents access data outside their authorized scope. Insecure output handling lets malformed agent responses affect downstream systems. These risks are specific to AI agents because traditional software doesn't interpret natural language instructions or dynamically select which tools to call. The distinction matters for security tooling: traditional application security testing (SAST, DAST) doesn't detect these risks because they exist at the semantic layer, not the code layer.
Operational risks cover the infrastructure failures that enable the other categories. Unrestricted resource consumption (agents running up unbounded compute or API costs), insufficient logging and monitoring (inability to detect when things go wrong), unsafe file uploads, and unsafe code execution round out the list. Operational risks are often dismissed as "hygiene" issues, but they're the enablers that make permission and input/output risks exploitable. An agent with excessive permissions is dangerous. An agent with excessive permissions and no logging is a catastrophe waiting to happen.
What Is AISPM?
AISPM takes the core concepts of CSPM, continuous discovery, assessment, and enforcement, and applies them to AI agents. The practice covers five capabilities.
Continuous discovery answers the question "what agents are running in my environment?" This sounds simple. In practice, most enterprises can't answer it. Development teams deploy agents through different frameworks, different cloud accounts, and different deployment pipelines. Shadow agents (deployed without security review) are common, particularly in organizations where the agent deployment process is slow or burdensome. Discovery tools scan for agent runtime signatures, MCP server registrations, API call patterns, and resource utilization that indicates agent activity.
Configuration assessment evaluates each discovered agent against security policies. What permissions does this agent have? What tools can it access? What data sensitivity levels does it touch? Is it running with least-privilege permissions, or was it provisioned with overly broad access as a shortcut during development? Configuration assessment compares the current state to the approved state and flags drift.
Permission risk evaluation goes deeper than configuration assessment to analyze the effective permissions an agent holds. An agent might have been provisioned with appropriate direct permissions but inherit additional permissions through tool chains. If an agent calls an MCP server that itself has elevated database permissions, the agent's effective permissions include that database access, even if it wasn't directly provisioned. Permission risk evaluation maps these transitive permission paths and identifies privilege escalation risks.
Policy enforcement at runtime moves security from assessment to action. When an agent attempts an action that violates policy, runtime enforcement blocks the action, logs the attempt, and alerts the security team. This requires an enforcement point in the agent's execution path, typically an AI gateway or policy enforcement proxy that intercepts agent actions before they reach backend systems. Learn more
Behavioral anomaly detection addresses the risks that static configuration assessment can't catch. An agent operating within its approved permissions can still behave anomalously. A sudden spike in data retrieval volume. A change in the pattern of tool calls. Access to data categories that the agent has permissions for but has never accessed before. These behavioral signals can indicate compromise, drift, or misuse, and they require baseline modeling and continuous comparison.
Together, these five capabilities form the AISPM practice. No single tool covers all five today, though vendors like Palo Alto Networks, Wiz, and emerging startups are racing to build comprehensive platforms. In the near term, most enterprises will assemble AISPM from a combination of existing security tools (CSPM, SIEM, PAM) extended with agent-specific capabilities and new agent-native security tools.
Building a Secure Agent Posture
The practical challenge is implementing AISPM without creating so much friction that teams bypass the security process entirely. The governance paradox applies here: security that's too cumbersome drives shadow deployments, which are less secure than governed deployments with less-than-perfect security.
Permission audits should run continuously, not quarterly. For each agent, the audit answers four questions: what data does this agent access (and at what classification level)? What tools does this agent use (and what can those tools do to backend systems)? What credentials does this agent hold (and when do they expire)? What actions has this agent taken in the last 30 days (and do those actions align with its intended purpose)? Automating these audits through infrastructure (rather than spreadsheets and manual reviews) is what makes continuous assessment feasible at scale. An organization with 50 agents can't afford quarterly manual audits for each one. An automated permission audit that runs daily and flags deviations from policy is both more thorough and less expensive.
Tool inventory management tracks which tools each agent can access, which versions of those tools are deployed, and what the known risks of each tool are. When a tool vulnerability is disclosed (like CVE-2025-6514 for MCP servers), the tool inventory tells you immediately which agents are affected. Without an inventory, the vulnerability response begins with a discovery project: "which of our agents use this tool?" That discovery project can take days or weeks, during which the vulnerability remains exploitable. Learn more
Guardrail layers provide defense in depth. Input validation guards examine what enters the agent (sanitizing prompts, validating tool call parameters). Output validation guards check what leaves the agent (detecting PII in responses, validating data formats). Rate limiting guards prevent runaway execution. Classification guards enforce data sensitivity boundaries. These guards operate at the infrastructure layer, not in agent code, so they protect every agent consistently.
Incident response preparation deserves its own focus within the posture conversation. When an agent security incident occurs, response teams need to know what the agent accessed, who authorized it, what decisions it made, and what downstream systems it affected. Without AISPM infrastructure providing this visibility, incident response starts with discovery ("what agents do we have?") instead of containment ("how do we limit the damage?"). The difference between these starting points can be measured in hours of exposure time and thousands of dollars in impact.
The Enforcement Spectrum
AISPM enforcement isn't binary. Enterprises need a spectrum of responses based on risk level and confidence.
At the lowest level, monitoring captures agent behavior for after-the-fact review. This is the minimum viable posture: you can't govern what you can't see. Every agent action should be logged with sufficient detail for security investigation and compliance audit.
At the next level, alerting notifies security teams when agent behavior deviates from baselines or when configuration drift is detected. Alerts should be actionable, with enough context for a security analyst to determine whether the alert represents a real risk or expected behavior.
At the enforcement level, policy-as-code blocks prohibited actions at runtime. An agent attempting to access data above its classification level receives a deny decision. An agent exceeding its rate limits is throttled. An agent calling a deprecated tool is redirected to the approved replacement.
At the highest level, automated remediation takes corrective action without human intervention for well-understood risk patterns. An agent detected with excessive permissions has its permissions automatically scoped down. An agent exhibiting drift patterns is automatically rolled back to a known-good configuration. An agent using expired credentials is automatically suspended pending credential renewal.
Most enterprises start at monitoring and progress through the spectrum as their AISPM infrastructure matures and their confidence in automated decisions grows. The critical insight is that each level builds on the one below it. You can't alert without monitoring data. You can't enforce without alert rules that define policy violations. You can't automate remediation without enforcement infrastructure that can take action.
A Maturity Model for Agent Security Posture
Enterprise agent security posture typically progresses through four stages.
Reactive (Stage 1): Security responds to incidents after they occur. No continuous discovery. Limited logging. Agent security is treated as application security, using the same tools and processes designed for traditional software.
Detective (Stage 2): Monitoring and alerting are in place. The security team knows what agents exist and can detect anomalous behavior. Audit trails meet basic compliance requirements. Configuration drift is detectable but not automatically prevented.
Preventive (Stage 3): Policy enforcement blocks prohibited actions at runtime. Least-privilege permissions are enforced through infrastructure. New agent deployments require security review. Tool access is managed through a central inventory with vulnerability tracking.
Predictive (Stage 4): Threat modeling identifies risks before they manifest. Permission risk evaluation maps transitive privilege escalation paths. Behavioral baselines detect subtle drift before it causes incidents. Automated remediation handles well-understood risk patterns without human intervention. At this stage, AISPM becomes a competitive advantage: the organization can deploy agents faster because the security infrastructure provides confidence rather than friction.
Most enterprises today are between Stage 1 and Stage 2. The organizations deploying agents at scale (more than 20 agents across multiple teams) are discovering that Stage 1 is inadequate. The OWASP Agentic Top 10 provides the risk taxonomy. AISPM provides the operational framework. The infrastructure layer, policy enforcement, monitoring, credential management, and audit logging, is what makes the framework actionable.
The acceleration timeline is compressed compared to CSPM's evolution. CSPM took nearly a decade to mature from concept to standard practice. AISPM will mature faster because the patterns are proven, the tooling ecosystem is already forming, and the incident cadence is forcing urgency. Organizations that get ahead of this curve, building posture management into their agent infrastructure from the start, avoid the expensive retrofit that always follows reactive security.
